Oxytocin, also known as pitocin, is a uterotonic drug. It can be extracted from the posterior lobe of the animal pituitary gland
or chemically synthesized. The chemically synthesized product does not contain vasopressin and has no blood pressure-raising
effect. It has a selective excitatory effect on the uterine smooth muscle, enhancing its contraction. The parturient uterus is the
most sensitive to oxytocin (with an increase in estrogen secretion), and the immature uterus has no reactivity to this product.
The reactivity of the uterus in the early or middle stages of pregnancy to oxytocin is relatively low, and it gradually increases in
the later stages of pregnancy, reaching its peak just before childbirth.
Application:
Oxytocin is a uterotonic drug. It is used for labor induction, expediting childbirth, and treating uterine bleeding caused by weak
uterine contractions after childbirth and abortion. Nasal drops of oxytocin can promote milk ejection.
